Further recommendation: "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Review: Angels of Darkness, Angels of Light - It seemed to me that I had encountered both in the course of my first trip to Moldova, one of the countries discussed in depth as a supplier of trafficked women in this excellent book by David Batstone. Angels of Darkness - the exploiters, operating with an inhumanity and spine chilling demonstration of evil in their relentless pursuit of profit, stealing the lives of the innocent and the weak. Angels of Light - the abolitionists and rescuers, those who would not look away, but rather risk their very lives to confront this great unrecognized evil of the modern age, and do so with courage, compassion, endurance and vision that would seem to be far beyond any human capacity that I could understand. Not for Sale describes this clash of good and evil swirling about the global slave trade in its many pernicious expressions in the 21st century. The author has chosen a narrative form in which he weaves together stories of lives - those of the innocent victims, the Angels of Darkness who enslave and exploit them, and the Angels of Light who will leave no stone unturned to set the captives free. Each chapter tells the story of a different manifestation of slavery from around the world. These include providing children for the smorgasbord of sex tourism in Southeast Asia, slave workers to make bricks in India, gruesome accounts of children abducted to serve as soldiers (and the sex slaves of commanders) in Uganda, the role of organized crime in developing trafficking as vibrant economic growth engine in the commercially devastated former Soviet Republics, and on and on. The reader comes away with an understanding of the many forms of modern day slavery, the conditions that give rise to it, and what can be done to combat it. And this is perhaps the best aspect of the book - it contains a call to action, and describes many ways in which even those of us who are not heroes can join the fight. Ultimately, it speaks of hope in a context that at first glance would seem to be utterly hopeless. As the author writes, "I believe in the power of individuals to change the world". Angels of Light.

An awful book -- What will you do about it?
I have been working in Relief and Development for 26 years in Asia, particularly in war zones, refugee situations natural disasters, civil unrest and major social issues like trafficking. David Batstone gives a terrible, graphic picture of slavery in the 21st century from just about every continent. It grabs your heart and will not let you go. This issue will require the same kind of perserverance that William Wilbertforce overcame in abolishing slavery, changing laws and worldviews in the UK in the 18th century. We have had the privilege of supporting the work of Pierre and Simonetta Tami and the Hagar Project in Cambodia since its inception. We have seen upclose the horror and pain of children as young as 6 years being sold, trafficked and abused. This book tells those stories in graphic, unbelievable detail from countries like Uganda, Thailand and Cambodia. These stories are not about statistics but about people with names and families who have endured hell, been scarred for life or have been killed in the process. You will not believe it, then you will become furious that this is happening today. It also shows ordinary people that are a voice for the voiceless and are making an incredible, difference. There are just too few of them. Maybe, you will ask yourself, "How do I get involved in this global effort?" This book is a call to action. Don't buy this book unless you are ready for engagement in a loving, compassionate fight against the evils of the 21st century slave trade. G. Stephen Goode Bangkok, Thailand

An Important Topic
In Not for Sale, David Batstone provides an informative look at the global problem of slavery. Human trafficking comes in many guises. Forced prostitution is the most common form of trafficking. However, modern slavery also encompasses the garment industry, restaurant workers, child soldiers, factory laborers, and domestic servants. Trafficking is a problem in poor and wealthy countries. Traffickers prey on the economic desperation of families. The exploited poor might find themselves in a modern-day version of the company store, in which the exploiter deducts sparse food and living expenses from meager wages. Or, the slave-holder continually adds interest on a small loan that can only remain unpaid. Attempts to escape the exploitation might result in violence against an individual or his or her family members. Traffickers also use shame against their victims. In some cultures, a woman losing her virginity under any circumstances is considered damaged goods, as it were. A woman will then feel inhibited returning to her family. In other cases, a trafficker might force a child soldier to murder someone in his village. The child then fears returning home. In some countries, the police or government officials might be complicit in human trafficking. Corruption such as this adds to the isolation of trafficking victims who may be reluctant to approach authorities about their plight, leading to a problem of slavery that is everywhere illegal but might be hiding in plain sight. "Look beneath the surface," one trafficking victim noted. "People who are trafficked usually are hidden, so pay attention to signs that seem out the ordinary." All in all, this is a troubling but worthwhile read.

No longer blind
As a senior in high school I was completely unaware of the modern day slave trade. This was the first book I've read that revealed that there was slavery still going on even here in the United States. This book contained graphic images and legitimate statistics that will open ones eyes to what most Americans have never seen before. Batstone used both logical and emotional appeal to strongly encourage the audience to take action. I strongly recommend this but want to warn others that the graphic imagery may be disturbing. I recommend this book especially to the younger generation, those who are figuring out their vocation or passion, because it will effect our future. The author uses imagery and expanded vocabulary to paint a clear picture of what is actually going in our world. Not only that but Batstone uses multiple real-life examples to make you feel connected to the victims. After reading this book I myself a senior in high school felt a call to action. I don't have a college education yet, I'm not some professional lawyer, and this is my first time finding out about this issue but even I felt passion from this book and want to get involved some how or some way. This book shows that you don't have to be a certain age or certain socio-economic status to make a difference, and I loved knowing this encouraging idea.

If You Want to Help Combat Slavery, This Book Is One of the Tools You Need
Many people think of slavery as a high-school history lesson related to the Civil War, but that's hardly the case. Slavery has been a tragic part of world culture for thousands of years and exists to this day. Fortunately in recent years, several well-organized groups have been fanning out around the world - providing educational materials to volunteers and taking direct action in many cases to change laws and free slaves. If you're on the verge of purchasing this book by David Batstone, a leading authority on modern slavery, then you're already interested in this issue and what you really want is a hands-on, heavy-duty book that investigates modern systems of human trafficking. This is the book you want. It carries an advisory to readers: "This book deals with mature subject matter." That's because this is grim stuff about slave laborers, child soldiers and enslaved sex workers. Batstone is professor of ethics at the University of San Francisco and, for six years, also was executive editor of Sojourners Magazine. He understands the issue - and the actions needed. In the final section of the book is an extensive overview of groups and Web sites around the world that can help to connect you with this modern-day abolitionist campaign.

Hard to read, but worth it.
This is a hard book to read. The stories will make your stomach turn. Some nights I had to put the book down in order to give myself some fresh air; other nights I was up much longer than I anticipated because I couldn't stop turning the pages. In Not For Sale you get a very thorough introduction into the problem of human trafficking. Bastone shares stories of victims and heroes who have been swept into this crazed underworld. He talks about the gambit of slavery issues (manual labor to sex slaves) and he talks about the problem both internationally and domestically (USA). It is an incredible story, and I am glad to have read it. It calls us to action, even as little as attentiveness. Highly recommended.

Great, informational book
This book was fantastic - it gave great detail as well as moving stories, and then provided plenty of information at the end on organizations who are fighting against this crisis. That way folks like me and you can have somewhere to start to get involved. I really recommend that everyone read it. The events that are described are so heartbreaking and awful, but this is stuff we need to know. I feel that those of us who are blessed with freedom and various resources (education and or time, money, creativity, networks of friends, homes, etc.) have a duty to use what we've been given to help people trapped in slavery (or other negative situations. Otherwise we're really wasting our time. Read it and loan it to a friend!

Eye opener
The only disappointment was the indifference of people I spoke with about this global problem.

Awesome Book
Liked the book. Informative. Left me wanting to find out more. Great organisation, David Batstone is a great man. We should all read more regarding this to make people more aware of the implications of what they do, and how it affects lives.
