Please be advised that the drive is external drive. The definition of one Gigabyte by operating systems versus product manufacturers.  Operating systems use a binary system which will present a lower number of GB than the decimal based system used by manufacturers to define the capacity of products. This is due to the binary system representing a GB as a higher number of actual bytes.

For example: Operating systems define a 1GB as 1,073,741,824 Bytes. We define 1GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes.

can i transfer photos from a memory card directly to this?

Depends on where you have stored your photos - as this has a USB cable - anything that can hook onto this can transfer photos - if its an SD card, then you need a reader to attach to then plug into this...it works the same as a standard external drive....but super fast transfer. you can always use your laptop - plug the SD card in and then transfer to the attached SSD drive...

Can I use this as storage for recordings from my smart TV?

I would like to inform you that the portable SSD was tested and confirmed for computers (windows and Mac). It was not tested for TVs. However, if you have a compatible port on your smrat TV, you may connect this SSD but we would not be able to support it.
