Shure BETA 57A Instrument Microphone - Supercardioid Dynamic Mic for Vocal and Instrumental Applications with High Output Neodymium Element, Durable Steel Mesh Grille and Shock Mount

I bought this microphone about two years ago and have never regretted it once. It's a fantastic microphone. I have used it in live shows with genres spanning metal, Folk, Classical and Jazz. It works great on Guitar amps and Snare drums for live stuff. However, I also use it regularly in my home studio with my Rode NT2a It works well with condenser microphones. Picking up the more "bassy" frequencies is very simple with it. I've got good results using it on Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, Classical Guitar, Piano, Cello, Snare drum, xylophone, For the price, it's a very fine microphone, and well suited to many situations. If you've got £120 and want a mic that does most things, rather than shelling out £250+ for a dynamic and condenser individually, than I highly recommend this.

Industry standard excellent mic

So I lost the blue rubber band but other than that this beauty is as good as the day I bought it. I've used it for clarinet, cajon, djembe, vocal, and more. I've lent it around and people love it. Just this morning the sound guy I lent it too said he's so impressed he's going to buy one himself.

I find the Shure Beta 57A to be far better for my voice than a traditional SM58. I borrowed one at a gig and have never looked back. The sound is much more crisp in the top range of frequencies and the overall sound is much more "expensive" than the SM58. If you can possibly afford the step up in price, I highly recommend it!

The Shure Beta 57a is an outstanding dynamic microphone. It works well on amps, drums and is a very good vocal mic. Very similar but a bit cheaper than the Beta 58a and in my opinion, more versatile due to the shape of the windshield. With a supercardoid polar pattern feedback rejection is excellent, and it has a higher output level than most dynamic mics, making the sound engineer's life a little easier. Very well made and can easily withstand a bit of rough handling. Pros: Great sound quality, versatile, extremely robust, good feedback rejection and high output level along with good looks. An industry standard! Cons: None as long as you get a real one. The only con is that there are lots of counterfeits about. If you are not buying from a Shure authorised dealer or contemplating buying second-hand then make sure you do some research beforehand so that you can spot a fake (Google "fake Beta 57a" for lots of info). Many of the counterfeits will be advertised as used, but some are supposed to be new.

I bought this from an Amazon listed site. For around one hundred pounds. I use it to mic up a Fender acoustasonic amp. The amp is small(30 amps) so I need this mic to send the sound through the PA, DI-ing the amp loses the acoustic qualities of the guitar. The microphone's construction is sturdy. previously I had been using a shure 57 and it had broken with road use. This one looks stronger. It does the job well and handles the requisite frequencies with some elegance. The mic clip provided is a bit clumsy and did not screw well onto the stagg mic stand. Plus its base was made of plastic - which could get stood on by a roadie. Naturally I replaced it with the Beyer mic clip - which is a better size, more strongly constructed, and screwed easily and firmly onto the mic stand. I'm playing thisyear at Fyle Folk Festival - come and judge foryourself how good it is.

A great mic,which is commonly used for instruments and in my case a snare drum.However think it also gives a great sound for vocals so a very versatile piece of kit.

I bought this mic for it's reputation as a workhorse both in the studio and in a live gig setting. So far I've put it through some use in both contexts and it's performed wonderfully. In a live application, I've used it as a vocal mic- there seems to be some debate over whether this or the Beta 58 is a better choice for live vocals, and I'd say that having heard both used onstage, I like the 57A because it cuts through the muddiness of most small venues a lot better. If you're playing a killer sounding room like, I don't know... the Ryman, it likely won't matter, but in the brewery barroom that resembled a really crowded hallway that we played the other night it made all the difference in the world over even an SM58- it was nice to hear myself sounding more like myself in the monitor. I've also noticed a few musicians that I respect a lot using it, and even Obama had one in his hand the other night while giving a speech. In my home studio, I've used the 57A to mic a snare (sounds killer, tons of snap and body), acoustic guitar (not bad at all, although I prefer an SDC mic here), and a guitar cabinet (sounds great.) Overall, I don't think you can go wrong with this mic. I'd like to add a Beta 58 to the collection as well, but after a lot of research I think the 57A is the most versatile of the two so if you're on a limited budget as most musicians are, I'd go with this. You won't be disappointed, and I'd be surprised if I find a dynamic mic that replaces it in my every-day, go-to gear case anytime soon.
