It really works, I've bought three, for all my family!
After reading lots of reviews I decided to buy one of these for my daughter who had just started university and was having real problems sleeping due to the noisy nature of her halls of residence. Having to get up for 9AM lectures when the revellers are still partying at 4AM was not much fun and I was concerned she would get run down and ill! She got the dohm, and it was fantastic. It does sound a bit like a fan, and has a soothing effect as it nullifies background noise. I was having difficulty sleeping as my husband can be a bit snorey and I'm a light sleeper and it was starting to drive me mad. My daughter kept saying get a dohm mum, but I felt it was a bit of an extravagance, but when it got to the point I was heading for the spare room after an hour or two of getting wound up by the noise, I thought I'd get one. We have both slept so much better with the dohm, probably a marriage saver! And to add to my recommendation, I have bought another one for my eldest daughter who is in her final year at university, sharing a house with five others, who are all on different body clocks, she says with the curtains drawn and the dohm on she can sleep through whatever noise is going on in the house. So this review may sound too good to be true, but it is completely genuine, and I have been recommending the dohm to friends and family, and in fact recommended it to a young girl I met at a drinks party the other night, who's recently moved into a noisy London flat. So perhaps it doesn't work for everyone, amongst the dozens of reviews I read there were a few who weren't happy, but I have to say it has been positively life changing for my family. We all function better with a good nights sleep and its definitely really helped all of us.

Amazing!
I don't usually write reviews on Amazon but felt I really should in this instance as the Dohm has honestly changed my life. I suffer from a condition called Misophonia which means certain external noises can cause me a lot of stress and anxiety. Living in an apartment, this is obviously not ideal as you cannot escape external noise, whether it be traffic, neighbours tvs, doors slamming etc. Previously when at home I often resorted to watching TV, listening to music etc through headphones to drown this unwanted noise out.Since I got the Dohm however this has changed considerably. I find as long as I have it running on its maximum power setting I can comfortably sit at home watching TV or reading and I am not interrupted by external noises! I have tried electronic white noise machines in the past but as the noise is repeated, this can also irritate me, whereas the Dohm with it's fan creates a much more "natural" noise that is actually quite soothing to listen to, it's basically the same as having a large fan in the room. You can make adjustments to the volume and tone of the sound which is very useful. The only criticism I would really have is that between the two power modes available, I struggle to tell a difference in terms of volume. If I could have it slightly louder it would be absolutely ideal, but overall it has been a great purhase.

Very good and does the job
I would agree that it's the best sound conditioner/sleep aid that is around at the moment. I live close to the road and I can always hear cars and other noises. We moved to a flat on the ground floor and I'm not used to sleeping on the ground floor so I found I was getting paranoid about every little noise I heard. This product does block out the noises and I can't hear the traffic so it's very good. I would agree with other users that it does sound a little artificial, I would prefer it if it sounded more like wind. When you first use it it will smell of burning plastic for a few days but that smell has now gone. I feel I can hear the mechanics of the machine sometimes than the white noise but it's still effective at getting me to sleep. It's a very cool device and it's clever how you can move it to make different levels of white noise. There is pretty much no difference between the low switch and the high switch. They sound exactly the same in loudness to me. The maximum sound is still not extremely loud but I think it would be effective for most people. At the loudest setting I can still hear my husband talking to people on the computer in the next room. When we are both in bed though I can't hear anything outside the room and it gets me to sleep a lot quicker. I haven't woke up during the night like I did before, I used to wake up 2-3 times a night due to the slightest little noise. I now sleep through the night so my days are better. I would recommend it as the best sleep aid out there.

Adjustable white noise to help you or your baby sleep
If you get jolted awake by loud sounds at night, stop what you're doing and buy this thing. Buy it right now. It's worth it. The machine just makes very natural and constant fan/wind sound, but with no air blowing. So, when there's a passing ambulance or a drunken dumb dumb outside your window, there isn't a decibel spike. The blowing air sound just drowns it out. I didn't even realize I was waking up tired from noise at night until I started using this thing. Now I sleep like a baby, and prefer not to sleep without it! On the UK electrical compatibility: this machine is perfectly UK compatible, and works just as well here as it does in the US. I know because owned one of these things in the US for many years. It was exactly the same brand, same model, just made for the 110v/60Hz electric grid that they have there. The loudest setting may be a tad quieter than it was there, but hardly noticeable. The difference between the two speed settings is also not as great in the UK as it was in the US, although there is still a small difference. It's probably because the machine was designed in the US, and uses the AC frequency to set the motor speed. But this has absolutely no negative impact on the function or safety. You can still adjust the sound of the white noise by sliding the casing around. You can still adjust the motor speed. And it's perfectly safe. Bottom line: it is UK compatible, and produces beautiful constant white noise for a good night's sleep. Well worth the price.

This product is seriously not fit for purpose!
After reading all the positive reviews and advertisement, I decided to purchase this device to help stop outside construction noises coming into the bedroom. I placed the device by the window where the construction noises came in. I switched on the device and literally 5 seconds later I felt a sharp pain in the back of my head and soon after I started to get a headache. So when my wife came home, without saying anything about my experience I asked her to try it out. When she switched it on she immediately said "I can could feel a sharp pain in the back of her head" and she started to get a headache! Somehow this device is emitting dangerously high level frequencies and is not fit for purpose and certainly not for baby nurseries as advertised! We did however tried to test this device to see if worked as advertised to "Provide excellent noise-masking capabilities" and "unwanted, disturbing or intrusive noise". When the construction noise started we switched on the device and it made no difference what so ever. The white noise sound which sounds like a noisy computer fan, simply added to the noise level of the construction noises. In other words we can still hear construction noises as clearly with or without the device switched on! I really cannot see how its possible for this device to provide any kind of noise-masking capabilities or from intrusive noises! So why all the positive reviews? I can only imagine that some people see it as a placebo pill and believe that such a device it going work and think it does, when its doing nothing! The sad truth is it does not work and I had to send mine back for a refund! This product should really be taken off the market or at least tested under EU standards for suitability. If I could give no stars I would, but I am forced to give one star to write the review!

A surprising delight
This product solved my noise problems! I have problems on all four walls and the ceiling: - very low rumbling traffic almost constantly, and a spike of heavy traffic 11pm - 1am which is quite loud. Heavy construction that starts every 8am, usually wakes me up. - one roommate who recently bought an Xbox One and plays Battlefield 4 almost constantly, and is really into the voice control mechanism ("XBOX HOME! XBOX NEXT PAGE! XBOX!! XBOX!! XBOX NEXT PAGE!") - another roommate who comes home late and makes inevitable noises, doors, etc. - families upstairs and behind my bed whose conflict resolution strategies involve screaming. So, this is my noisiest apartment to date, and I've found it impossible to sleep well on most days, and on the weekend it's hardly relaxing. With a Marpac my sense of ease is greatly increased. At first when I turned it on it was far too soft, but I've realised the intention isn't to block out noise but rather to give your brain something else to latch onto. If I strain my hearing I can hear the traffic, gunfire, screaming, and doors...but if I just relax, magically, I don't notice it any more. In order to sleep I still like to use earplugs, specifically "Ohropax Soft Earplugs". In combination with a Marpac I get perfect sleep. I agree with others that running a fan would work just as well (I just want a fan noise), but a) you have to have a fan, which if you travel you won't, and b) a fan necessarily implies cool air, which in winter I certainly don't want, particularly in poorly insulated bedrooms. As a bonus I suffer from tinnitus and the Marpac greatly alleviates that as well.

Tinnitus/Hyperacusis - this thing causes more vibration noise than my portable AC
So i'm suffering with hyperacusis i believe, i can hear TOO well and i currently use a lectrofanevo and other things to distract myself as i can hear even the quietest of noises... For example: my pc is silent with noctua fans but even at 400rpm, i can hear them and they sound buzzy (Any airflow to me does). This was meant to be there for when i wanted a break from the lectofanevo noise - i like my portable AC on fan mode so i wanted this to prevent me getting cold from the AC. However, this device is very loud (not sure why comments say it's quiet) and more importantly... it causes a ton of vibration. Simply holding it, is like you're using a power tool, the rubber feet it has is pretty shoddy - i tried placing it on a mat to dampen vibration but it's just noisy regardless. It wouldn't help me in any way.

Well made item which started making a "ticking" noise after 3 months
Interesting gadget. It is very well made ( although it has a weirdly dated 1960's sort of feel to it). This UK version only has one speed ( the description of "Dual Speed" is inaccurate and should be changed) -but I found that you can produce quite a range of different sounds depending on how you adjust it. It's worth pointing out that if you intend to use this to drown out unwanted noise, it would have to be louder than the noise you're trying to drown out. There's nothing magic about it. So basically what we have here is a plastic box containing a fan, which makes noises which you can vary from a muted swoosh to a (fairly) loud hiss. It's not as loud as a hairdryer or vacuum cleaner. I found it very successful for drowning out passing traffic, annoying bird song etc. It would be of great benefit to a shift worker. It is rated at 20 watts, meaning that during an 8 hour night it will consume less than 3 pence worth of electricity. Over a year, at 8 hours per night it'll use less than a tenner's worth of electricity. This item is actually manufactured in the USA and - (even allowing for the fact that they usually pay in dollars what we have to pay in pounds)- in my view it's about 30% over- priced. After just over 3 months of use at 8 hours per night, this item started making an irritating "ticking" noise. This was due to the fan having come loose on its drive shaft, easily fixed with a spot of glue ( see photo)

It nit loud enohh to make a difference there are much more alternative methods of distracting annoying nose at a fraction of the
It came well boxed the manual simple and short and the finish pleasant. I am morbid obese and have a. machine at night that helps with sleep aponia and because I am diabetic and on huge amount of morphine 300 my a day that interfere with my sleep. 30 years on strong sleeping tablets too and I find it impossible to get and stay asleep I started using a electric fan and recently a 1,000 watt air con it keeps me nice and cool as I over heat on operate medications and sweat and dripping wet all the time I found the noise my air con makes it a bit like a jumbo jet on a run way blocks out all those nasty irritating domestic noises that make sleeping a pain. The noise hides the sound of loud motor bikes whizzing by my house which is on a main road. My neighbours are very noisy slamming there car doors on there range rovers bmw and other cars. They like to shout to each other and have children that love making constant noise. Church goers knocking on the front door and neighbour hood officers disturbing you for information about the community. I found having a loud sounding fan or air con a blessing. It distracts every day noises allowing you to relaxer to a wonderful blowing rumbling sound from them./ all these disturbances just seem to disappear and vanish in to the back ground and these real sounds just become noises that are unidentifiable. Now this dohl white noise sleep machine has a finish fan built in and a on and off switch. On the more up market machine there is a choice of a low or high fan souls level output to be honest the loud setting is about as loud as the smallest fan you can buy from Argos that is so quite I can still hear every day noises very easily. It is a expensive machine would be cheaper instead of paying £60 to but a £15 fan which does the same job and is 3 times cheaper. I think this machine is fantastic for those people who like to moan and complain about everything there is to complain about My rip off 240 volt version designed for the UK was a cheap and useless purchase. I sent it back for a refund the next day. The fan so quite as I said a small fan from a electrical warehouse sound wise compares well in a comparison. Don't waste your money send it back and buy a normal fan and also enjoy a beautiful gentle breeze of wind and a may be the isolating effects. To let you in to a secret there are many fantastic very cheap applications you can down load for a pound that gives you relaxing tribal and animal sounds from around the world that play all night running while your i phone is left on charge.with a fan it might only last a few years like this white noise sleep machine last of all I find the I phone applications of thunder sndightnjng rain forest and animals in Africa so much more relaxing and can be played though your portable blue tooth speaker that runs off the mains. It is all built in to a compact I phone that you can take anywhere in the world without worrying about if it is ac or dc powered I think the seller and manufacture will pinch me if they knew my name and address

Not Satisfied
I've owned many of these units over the last 15 years, but were the versions from the USA. I tried this version and as many others point out in the comment section, there is no sound difference between the low and high, seems like always stuck on low, which is not near loud enough, so returned the unit.
