5/5: It reads, it writes, and has decent speeds (but don't bother purchasing for new PC builds unless you use CDs/DVDs regularly
I bought this for a recent gaming PC which I put together myself, as it was an option which:1) Was reasonably priced2) Had next-day prime shipping3) Fulfilled a basic function which i'm still reluctant to be without. It's fitted in my gaming PC now and there are absolutely no issues. It reads, it writes, and it does so at decent speeds.Small note though: Unless you really NEED a DVD or CD reader/writer because you use CDs and DVDs regularly, I wouldn't bother buying one. Save the £14 and put it towards other components / future upgrades. In all honesty, I think it's a little waste of money (even if they are cheap) to even bother purchasing these when you can virtually mount CDs and burn most stuff onto cheap USBs.5/5: No issues. Recommend.

It's Media Jim, But Not as We Know it
Once I overcame the initial shock of discovering that this device cannot play DVDs without first being fitted inside one of them computer-me-bobs, I was pleasantly surprised. This works straight out of the box and even has a little sticker on top telling me all about things I don't understand. For the price, it does everything that should be expected and at the speeds expected. However, that said, I can't possibly comment on the writing capability, as I'm yet to burn anything to disc.Given that I'm now living in the year of our lord 2015, I therefore don't expect I'll ever discover its true re-writing powers, since disc burning is now something that only barbaric, Middle-Eastern ideologues do when they wish to erase evidence. I'm not even sure why I bought this in the first place, since the only reason I know it can read discs is because I tested the device once I'd installed it. I doubt it'll see any further action now until, when, never I guess. In short, if you're one of them people that just has to have a fully operational computer, capable of reading media from every which way, get this. It does what it says on the tin.

Burns Well But Not At The Promised Speed
I contacted Samsung before I purchased this. They refused to answer any questions as they no longer support this model (or any of them).I can confirm that the claimed 24x writting on any DVD media is a complete and utter untruth. I have tried endless disks and the fastest burn was 16 speed...so the advertised 24x burn on 16x disk is a lie! The burn is nice and even though, I haven't experienced any coasters (so far) it is on the noisey side but there again it is very cheap.I burn a lot and my last one lasted years...so at this price it's a bargain.

No-nonsense - does what it says on the tin
Supplied as "bare bones" unit, with a pack of fixing screws and an instruction sheet. That's why it's so cheap. You must provide your own SATA cable and, if it's your intention to write or rewrite discs, your preferred software.Fitting is simplicity itself - a child could do it! Like many other buyers, I put it in my home-built PC.Windows 7 (yes, I still use it) recognises it almost immediately, so it's ready to go. It reads and plays discs with little fuss - the only thing you hear is a slight buzz when it's doing its job. It's a budget winner from Samsung, and I recommend it.

Just does what it promises. Couldn't ask for more.
Bought this as I was building a black box from all the various parts I had lying round the place, and needed a DVD drive. It's perfectly good at what it does. For the price, it's an amazing bargain. I've been using other brands up until now and this seems to be the equal of a couple of drives I bought a while back and paid a lot more money for. As a drive for system builders this bare bones drive is ideal as I already have software to use it with, and don't want any crippled versions or bloatware on a DVD.Just does what it promises. Couldn't ask for more.

worked first time great, but won't work correctly again takes two hours ...
Wouldn't recomend it if you're using windows 7 ultimate, worked first time great, but won't work correctly again takes two hours to burn a dvd, it seems there is a compatability issue, so wate of money.
