Your Labrador Retriever Puppy Month by Month, Second Edition, provides new puppy owners with everything you need to know and do at each stage of development to make sure your playful, energetic puppy grows into a happy, healthy, and well-adjusted companion. Expert authors Terry Albert, vet Deb Eldredge, and breeder Joanne Olivier team up to cover all the questions new owners tend to have and may not think to ask, including: • What to ask the breeder before bringing your puppy home. • Which vaccinations your puppy needs and when to get them. • How to make potty training as smooth (and quick) as possible. • What do to when your puppy cries at night. • Why and how to crate train your puppy. • When socialization should happen and how to make sure it does. • When your puppy is ready to learn basic commands—like Sit, Stay, and Come—and the best way to teach them. • When and how to go about leash training. • How much exercise your puppy needs to stay physically and mentally healthy. • What, how much, and when to feed your puppy to give him the nutrition he needs without the extra weight he doesn’t. • When your puppy is ready for obedience training and how to make sure it works. • How and how often to bath your puppy, brush his coat, clip his nails, and brush his teeth. • How to know what requires a trip to the vet and what doesn't. • What causes problem behaviors, when to expect them, and how to correct them. Review: Great book by very knowledgable lab person - I'm only through month 4 of a lab's life, but wow, what a useful book! As anyone who has had one found out, these are VERY happy, VERY strong, and highly energetic dogs that take several years to mature. Start training when they're young or you will be left behind. As I told my vet (repeatedly), "When do these dogs mature?? I am too old for this dog!" Once he did get trained (by someone else--I didn't have a clue how to get control of him at that point) and a few years old--well, all my friends as well as I totally fell in love with him! These can be awesome dogs. Be sure the breeder has handled him a lot, and make sure you can view genetic testing on his parents. Review: Informative and Well Written! - I have bought a few different books that are supposed to teach you all there is to know about the stages of puppyhood, but none of them have done as great a job as this book here. It's very well written and makes the reading easy and inviting to read. The book is quite stout and has info on just about everything a new Lab owner or even an experienced owner could benefit from reading over. If you're looking into adding a furry chocolate, black, or yellow bundle of joy to your life, this book is a must read! The shipping was quick and delivery efficient.

Helpful!
I've owned a Lab before, but he was grown and rescued from a shelter. He had a few "issues" I could blame on the previous owners... So when I got my 12-week-old puppy, I was really worried -- whatever might go wrong with him would be down to me! This book was just what I needed (I read it from cover to cover the day before he arrived). Yes, there are differences between theory and practice, and every dog is an individual -- but the book takes that into consideration and includes just about everything you might need to know. Fun trivia as well. Training tips are great -- better than puppy classes! I'm glad I got the eBook version, however, because there's no index, which makes the search function necessary.

good starter guide
We've only had Mastiffs in the past. Despite what you may have heard, they're pretty easy to train. this is our first lab, and we haven't raised a puppy in years. This book is pretty good at getting us through the puppy experience so fat. Not real expensive, worth the buy if it's you're first lab.

Very good book on lab puppies!
Very good book. I really like how it’s broken down month by month. I’m experienced with dogs and training, but haven’t had an 8 week old puppy in 20 years. This was a good refresher, not to mention guide and explanation of labs. We get our first lab in a few days and this book has helped us prepare, and plan. Highly recommended reading for lab pup parents!

Great for new or veteran lab owners
We just adopted our third chocolate lab, and I bought this to read while waiting for her to come home. Whether you've had labs before or are newbies, this is a really great book! Lots of info on so many topics, you can easily find answers to questions you may have. Training tips are very helpful, nutrition, grooming, etc. There is always more to learn about these great dogs!

Invaluable resource for the Lab Retriever owner
I wish I had read this before I got my puppy but at least I started reading it within 2 or 3 days of getting my pet. I thought I knew something about raising a puppy, but it's been a long time since I had one and I forgot how challenging it was. The fact that I am doing this alone rather than with a partner has made it that much more difficult. Rather than reading month by month, I think it'r most helpful to read it in its entirety to keep from making mistakes you'll have to somehow correct later. The author uses commonsense and humor to make her points, which make a lot of sense and which I would not have thought of without her pointing the way. I've watched several videos produced by dog training companies intent on getting people to buy expensive packages, but I don't believe I will need these thank to this book. Highly recommend.

Insightful information
This book gives an overview of what to expect for each month. Even though I have had Labradors before, I found that it has provided a decent refresher on life with a puppy and will hopefully help set up some success with my new puppy. I really wish I had this when I first starting sharing my life with my six year old labs. It has certainly normalised some of the experiences that I went through back then with my boys and I feel I am better equipped this time around by having read it.

Excellent and thorough book.
This book provides an excellent and thorough discussion of everything that you need to know for the first year of your Labrador’s life! You can easily see what to expect each month in terms of behaviour and lots of useful tips/training guidelines are given at the appropriate age. I would thoroughly recommend this book although do bear in mind that it refers to American vaccination schedules and the American Kennel Club.

It does help
This is a complete step-to-step guide on how to rise a lab puppy. I am not a native English speaker, but it was still clear to me, and it proved to be effective. It did help me a lot to go through this wonderful adventure of welcoming a lab into our home
