The pattern states double knitting yarn. Can it be any yarn or is it specifically baby double knitting yarn?

Yes if it says double knitting yarn then you have to use that or it will alter the size of the hats. You don't have to use baby double knitting but needs to be soft for the prem babies hope this helps.
