Awesome Blade At This Price Point, Y'all!!!
Update 2: Ball bearing fell out of lock mechanism, and I contacted S&W support through the Amazon product support page, and let me tell ya, their support is fantastic! They offered to warranty the knife out for the same model number or, if I wanted, I could visit their support page and choose another product in its place. Absolutely fantastic customer support. Most likely, the lock mechanism was defective from the get-go, causing the issues with opening. It almost certainly was the reason that the blade got stuck in closed and open positions. If you buy a S&W product, rest assured that their customer support will handle the issue!!! UPDATE: Jammed 2nd day, jammed open on 3rd day, completely jammed on 4th day. Had more expensive and cheaper blades that lasted a LONG time. I'll update if situation is rectified by Smith & Wesson. Man, I am lovin' this blade!!! It is beefy - both the handle and the 3.5" blade - and it's sharp right out of the box. You could probably sharpen it a tiny bit more, but I actually slightly cut myself trying to use the thumb flip rather than the spring-assist. So, it's plenty sharp enough directly out of the box. It's directly as described, and yes, the video is accurate on the sharpness of the knife. The spring assist is quick, and the safety is quality. It's got good weight to it, and while I know there have been complaints about it being too heavy, I completely do not understand those complaints. This thing is sturdy, and it fits in the hand very, very nicely for either slicing a box/EDC purposes or, if needed, self-defense. I can't speak to the durability or how well the blade holds an edge as of yet because I just got the blade today. However, I will probably update later because I think some of the complaints about this blade at this price are asinine. This is a fantastic blade, maybe one of my favorites because of how well it fits in my hand and the feel/weight of it when using. I also have not used the window breaker, but there's no doubt in my mind that it would work just fine, especially with the 7.1 oz weight. I was looking forward to this blade arriving, and it did not disappoint at this price point. This is a fantastic deal.

Great Value for a Great EDC Knife
I bought this knife because I was looking for a slightly larger and beefier EDC knife with a glass breaker and I didn't wan't to spend a ton of money. I have carried a Gerber 22 FAST DRAW knife with a 3" partially serrated blade for about 2 years now and it is still a fantastic knife. With only minimal upkeep and sharpening it has remained a truly wonderful knife to own and use and I would highly recommend it to anyone. However, this review is about my new S&W SWMP4LS so here goes. This is a larger knife, it has a 3.6" partially serrated blade, and it is heavier than my Gerber 22. It feels about 50% heavier but it's not so heavy that it feels uncomfortable in either the hand or on my belt. In fact, I rather like the extra heft; it gives the knife a very substantial feel. It comes quite sharp out of the box and remained so for a long time. Even though it comes only roughly ground the blade still gets the job done. A trip to a professional sharpener (or do it yourself if you have the skill and time) and you can really put a fine polished edge on this knife. This is the first assisted opening knife I've ever owned with a spine flipper; all my other AO knives all use thumb studs only. It took about three openings with the flipper for me to become a convert. I used the thumb knob to deploy the blade several times and found that the spine flipper actually works better and is easier to use. The knife rests very comfortably in my palm when I deploy the blade using the spine flipper. The "M.A.G.I.C. assist" opening system deploys the blade quickly and locks open with a satisfying "click!" Once open the liner lock keeps the blade firmly in place and you can even use the side safety lock as an added measure of protection. When closing the blade there is a nice little bit of tension as the blade locks shut in the frame. It's just enough resistance to let you know the blade is closed and once again you get a satisfying "click!" that tells you the blade is properly closed. A frame lock would be a bit more secure but would also raise the price. I've found that a liner lock in a good knife from a reputable company is a good locking mechanism for AO knives. The glass breaker works like a charm. I never used a glass breaker before but was easily able to punch through several car windows and a windshield with minimal effort. I would recommend gloves and glasses for safety. The side safety is designed like a safety toggle on a gun. I always prefer some type of safety on my AO knives and this one is quite nice. It toggles up (off) and down (on) like a safety on a handgun. When it is off you see a standard red dot; Warning! Safety is off! The overall construction seems to be quite good. The frame is rugged, there is no play in the blade when it's deployed and the pocket clip is sturdy but easy to use. Unlike many other folders this knife only comes with one pocket clip option; right handed, tip down. I gave it to a left handed friend and he was able to carry it comfortably enough in his pocket but said he would prefer a sheath. The knife has an aggressive and unique look and I find it to be aesthetically pleasing. Some jimping along the top of the knife where your thumb comes to rest would be a good addition and would make for a better grip. The 4034 stainless steel blade keeps an edge well and is wearing well. S30V steel would be better but would also drive up the cost. All things considered, the Smith & Wesson SWMP4LS is an excellent EDC knife. For an AO knife in the $30-$50 range this one is hard to beat. I give this knife 5 stars. It's an exceptional value and a wonderful knife.

For a $40 blade, a great knife still 8 months later.
Sale price grabbed my attention. Good reviews piqued my interest enough to buy it to "check it out". To be clear, I'm not a weekend warrior nor wanna-be spec ops guy so my use for this knife is as an every day carry tool and not something to ward off a hoard of aggressors when I run out of ammo. I've replaced a plastic-handled SOG folding knife with it. The M&P is decidedly heavier at 7.1oz and there's no doubt it's clipped inside one's pocket. I really like its fit in my hand with its contour for my middle and fore fingers and the "beefier" end that fills my palm (ref my photos). I enjoy the well positioned and easily accessible lock as I've had other knives inadvertently open in my pocket. The one-handed opening assist is best described as a more of a knob than a lever. As such, it requires some modest practice and deliberation to open the blade (which it does smoothly and 'smartly'). If one chooses not to use the assist, a small square 'grab' plate about an inch from the hinge end provides for two-handed opening. Note: when opening in this manner, the blade will spring only about 1/3 of the way open -- something I see as a safety feature. One then grasps the blade to open it to its locked position. There is no provision for the pocket clip to be moved to the opposite side of the handle. The knife appears to be designed such that carry in the right front pocket positions the blade toward the back. Thus, if one doesn't lock the blade and it inadvertently opens, it won't swing wide in the pocket. As noted in the manufacturer's description, the knife has a window punch on the end opposite the hinge (where else would it be?). I guess it could come in handy if one was rescuing either pets or children locked in a car on a hot day. A piece of spring steel moves across the hinge end of the blade to lock it open in a manner common to most folding knives of this type today. Closure is a matter of pressing this piece out of the way to unlock and close the blade. Two screws secure the pocket clip approx 3/8" from the end of the knife resulting about 1/2" (including the window punch) to extend out of one's pocket. Overall so far I'm pleased with my purchase. However, I reserve the right to report further at a later date. Later Date Comments 5/26/2024 After this being my EDC knife since I purchased it, overall I'm still pleased with it and it continues as my EDC blade. Two point about it I think are noteworthy: 1. As it is heavier than the other three knives I've carried previously, clipped to the corner of my front pants pocket, its weight has not become obnoxious. 2. Expect the blade hinge Torx (star) screw to begin to loosen. As it does, the blade will begin to open with less and less need for using the assist. More, as this happens, the blade will no longer hold in the handle when closing it one-handed. It will also open spontaneously without assist on releasing the lock. This will necessitate a two-handed close to ensure the blade doesn't spring back open before one is able to engage the lock. The remedy is simple as it only requires tightening the hinge screw. I suspect I will need to tighten it over the life of the knife. 3. Being quite ignorant re metallurgy, the blade appears to be of sufficient "stuff" to hold its edge well.

Didn't I just order this today?
I think I ordered this just this morning, and I have it already. Well, maybe it was late last night. In any event, impossibly fast delivery...which frankly, I've come to expect from Amazon. This is a pretty awesome knife. Delivered "sporting goods store sharp" but I can fix that without a problem. It took me about five minutes to figure out how the knife works--I NEVER read instructions. This S&W knife is noticeably faster than the blade on my USMC-issued "shroud cutter," but it isn't "sheath knife" fast in the quick draw sense. It works perfect and is easy to use one-handed once you get the hand of how it works. More concealable than a sheath knife if that is important to you, and very sturdy. I'm pretty certain the glass breaker will handle any windshield, or anything else you smack with it. I don't remember handling any conventional assisted opening knives that are faster than this one. It's not as fast as an OTF stiletto, but then it isn't an OTF stiletto. Obviously I haven't had this knife very long, but it can only get better as it breaks in. So far I'm very happy. Adding an update: I've had this knife for about nine months now. I won't say I carry it with me 24 x 7, but it has seen a lot of use under very diverse circumstances. Nothing experienced that would change my 5 star rating. If anything I like the knife more now that I've used it a lot. Keep in mind, this is NOT A PETITE KNIFE. It is large and sturdy. Holds a razor edge. It will conceal in a pocket unless someone looks carefully; but if you are looking for a small concealable, this knife isn't for you. But if you want a big folding blade knife that is very fast into action (that is, if you do your part and learn to use it well) consider this one. I'm not certain there are better alternatives, but there are more expensive alternatives. Save your money-- this one does everything the more expensive alternatives do. Oh, I do a lot of salt water, mud and grime and grit. I do clean and care for the knife. So far this knife has taken everything I've thrown at it. I'd like to say I will buy another soon, but this one is going to last for years, Maybe I'll buy one as a present for someone...

It's heavy and hard to open, but still a great knife
I purchased the Smith and Wesson SWMP4LS and the Amazon Basics folding knives at the same time. I will keep them both. As many reviewers have mentioned, the S&W is difficult to open. This is true for me as well, as an aging, out of shape old man. But, after a little lubrication and daily exercising of the knife it has become easier. The S&W knife is a serious knife. It has a safety switch which prevents the knife from accidentally opening or, once open, it prevents the knife from folding back into its handle even if the blade release has been used. It is a heavy knife as well, but, in my view, this is helpful both in controlling the knife as well as adding inertia in the event the glass-breaking tip at the base of the handle needs to be used. While I will likely carry this knife while at the camp site, my choice for EDC is the Amazon Basic version. It is lighter and easily opened and closed with one hand. It, too, has the glass-breaking tip AND a separate blade specifically designed for cutting seat belts should that be necessary. It is lacking a safety switch, but that feature is a rarity among folding knives. I would have given the S&W knife 5 stars if it wasn't so difficult to open. Given there is a safety switch, I would think making the task of opening this knife a little easier for those with weaker hands would not be a detriment to the design.

My Every day carry knife
An amazing knife. It goes everywhere with me and it's strong enough to handle any task at hand. However you must be careful with the lockability. Sometimes it doesn't stay locked

Solid Knife for a solid days work!
I just purchased this knife for a second time because my first knife, purchased in 2012, went missing. My first purchase came after a few months of research. I was looking for a "working man's knife." I needed something to cut open boxes, slice through tie downs, pry things open, etc. That's in addition to cutting an occasional sandwich or fruit at lunch time. My search criteria included "assisted open, partial serrated edge, ambidextrous thumb notch," the last a necessary requirement as a lefty. You'd think I was looking for a lost city, trying to find all these features in a single, solid, well built knife. I'd find one or two features, but never all. Then I finally came across this one. It had everything I was looking for, plus the added bonus of a locking feature. After eight years of hardcore use, I can honestly say this is one of the best knives I've ever owned. It has some serious heft without being too thick and heavy. The grip feels good in your hand. The spring assist makes opening it, while your other hand is full, a breeze. That's not to say this is the perfect knife. At first I was little disappointed it didn't include a seat belt cutter, for example and, were I an EMT, the absence of that feature may have had me reconsider my purchase. That said, I'm pretty sure the serrated edge on this blade would make short work of a seat belt anyway. I might also choose a different knife if I was going to press it into "survivalist" duties, something with a striker for example, for making fires. These are examples, of course, of how I excuse spending my money on more than a few really cool knives. :) As for this knife, if you are looking for a hardcore everyday working knife I would stop looking now. You found it. While I miss my old knife with all its scratches and the worn finish of a well used tool, I look forward to putting it's replacement through its paces. The fact that I'm purchasing this as replacement for the first one, after eight years of continuous use, should tell you something right there.

An overall nice knife
I was looking for a knife that I could quickly open with one hand, had a lock, and looked cool (what can I say, I like black). This was my first assisted opening knife, and I abused it. I used it as a knife, chisel, screwdriver, hammer. I liked the feel of the assisted opening so much that I would absentmindedly open and close it while reading or laying around. It was opened and closed upwards of 40 times a day. After two years of this, a part of the opening trigger snapped, which meant the rear trigger was non-functional. However, it still had the assisted opening working with the thumb stud. So I was pretty satisfied. PROS: -Sharp out of the box -Very cool looking -Nice weight -Functioned very well, with little slop. -Insanely durable -Easy to sharpen -Lock functioned perfectly. -Cut anything I put in front of it, including rope, paper, wood, cans, and (stupidly) my hand CONS: -It did have a piece break two years into our abusive relationship -The pocket clip got a tad loose (but I was able to tighten it) -The serrations are a bit of a bear to sharpen for someone without much experience, such as myself. However, you shouldn't really need to. -My biggest issue with this knife: the thumb- "stud". It's actually a rectangle of metal affixed to the exterior of the knife. It's a little harsh on soft hands for a couple of days. CONCLUSION: This knife did everything advertised, and more. Assuming you're not a complete idiot such as myself, this knife will last for quite some time. If you're buying this as a combat knife, I can attest that it rends flesh quite well (again, I'm not always the brightest), and opens wickedly swiftly. TLDR CONCLUSION: Would recommend. Any cons are heavily outweighed by the pros.
