What is the shortest distance/diameter can be adjusted to?

Ken, the minimum spray distance (assuming a normal water pressure of 40 PSI) is about 20 feet.

How do you limit the spray direction on the orbit 56351 zinc impact on metal step spike?

There’s a metal plate on the sprinkler head that you can fold down to shorten the distance or fold up to increase the distance.

How do you adjust the diameter of the sprinkler to get the maximum range of up to 85 ft?

More than anything the way to get optimized distance, is to have high water pressure.

Why doesn't the manufacturer fix the spikes so they don't break so easily? I love them but have bought too many and now am switching to a new product

Yes, this has happened to us as well. We have learned to use a tent spike to make a hole first, we have hard ground issues and found the tips are weaker than the ground. They will replace just the tips if you need it.
