Using a Map & Compass

Though the focus of this document is dated it never hurts to compare the guidance tools of yesterday to those in use today. From maps and compasses to hand held GPS travelers can be confident of their location in unknown or unfamiliar lands / waters. Easy to read!

Probably not the best book about compasses or the only book needed to understand map reading and using a compass, but a good start. The book is easy to read and understand. I have not read any other books about map and compass reading, so it is hard to compare it with anything. It usually requires a few books about these subjects to get a good understanding. I plan to re-sell the book and then read other books about maps, compass, and navigation.

This book brushes the cobwebs away, and even has a couple places that I learned something. If the content of this book are new to a person, I would recommend getting out there with this book and testing them out for practical application purposes and confidence building.

Hikers and backpackers who decide to veer off the marked trails need to have some good basic map reading skills. This book is a good beginner's reference.

very clear and concise, it is easy to follow with good illustrations.. Also, examples and application advice to help in most situations

A very good book on compass and map use.Has sections on night navigation and weather forecasting that other books don't cover. The only drawback is the author recommends drawing magnetic declination lines on every map if you compass can't be adjusted for it. He doesn't cover converting from true bearings to magnetic bearings which eliminates the need for drawing the lines.

Don't waste your time or money if you already have an understanding of map reading and land navigation. This book is good for someone with no knowledge of anything as it relates to map reading and land navigation.
