Pure Encapsulations manufacturers their own products in their own state-of-the-art plant in Sudbury, Massachusetts. I have a lot of trouble swallowing pills. Can these be cut down? Or are they capsules with powder that I can open and mix in liquid?

Accepted Answer

First, drink half a glass or more of water, enough to thoroughly moisten mouth and throat tissue, and then place pill or capsule on tongue, followed by a big gulp or more of water.  My doc reminds that meds in capsule/pill form are better swallowed whole if possible, because optimum absorption is in stomach/intestinal tract, rather than mouth.  Also, some meds taste awful.  If directions allow taking with food, coating pill/capsule with butter/oil of some kind makes fast work of task.  (Oil trick works when giving meds to dogs, as well.  I usually encase med in ball of cheese spread or peanut butter.)  Last choice is mixing with liquid, which means losing therapeutic value:  note how much powder remains stuck on sides/bottom of glass/spoon.
